Questions and Answers About Sleep

Hi Everyone,

This is a problem that I've been having for several years now and isn't getting any better. I just figured I'd have to live with it but I thought I'd try this site. My husband of nine years snores. He used to snore every once in a while but now it's every night. I assume it's age because he's thin and he exercises. He is 51 years old. I am, unfortunately, a light sleeper and cannot sleep with his snoring. I wear ear plugs every night but I still hear his snoring because it is quite loud. Most days I get maybe 6 hours of sleep which is really not enough for me. I almost always wake up in the middle of the night because of his snoring. Is there anything I should be looking into in order to make this better. It's really affecting my mood and my energy.

I can only give you my story and what we are trying.

My husband snores as well, and due to some medication problems, also had restless leg syndrome. He stopped the meds and the leg thing stopped, but the snoring did not. By that time, I had moved into a spare room, because I was not even getting 6 hours of sleep. The best I was getting was maybe 2 or 3. In fact, I was facing daytime sleepiness, fatigue, irritability, because I wasn't getting any sleep at night. I, too, am a light sleeper, especially the early hours of the morning. Also, being jolted out of sleep was giving me headaches and making my blood pressure spike in the morning. After awhile, it was like my body knew it wouldn't be able to be comfortable.

Sleeping in another room allowed me to get a good night sleep for a month or two, restoring my ability to function. But it is not something I love or advocate. Do it if you have to in order to get yourself back to "normal." For the long term, my husband is getting a CPAP machine. He had a sleep study and it is thought that it will help him, because he suffered with fatigue during the day.

We haven't received it yet, so I am back in the bedroom, trying to get some sleep. I keep the spare room as an option, but hope that when the CPAP machine comes, we can have some peace and quiet in the same room.

Have your husband talk to his doctor about it. Is he tired at all during the day? Sleep apnea is NOT just a disease of the obese. Slim people can have it, too. It is about breathing, not body fat levels.

My husband snored too. We slept at a friend's house and he did not snore that night. I deceided to try to see if I could figure out how not to have him snore any more. Working on this a few years I finally came up with the solution of a pillow that positions the head so that the muscles in the back of the throat do not vibrate. Hi, I do sleep studies for a living, and your husband may also have sleep apnea. The same thing that causes snoring ( loose tissues collapsing in the airways, soft palate dropping in the airway, tounge falling back, etc.) can also cause a cessation of breath or a partial cessation. This can eventually cause high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. When we don't get enough air, our oxygen levels drop, therefore causing our heart rate to increase. Your heart is over working when it should be resting. I strongly reccomend that your husband gets a sleep study done. It may be more than just snoring. Let me know if this helps. Has your husband had a sleep study? Snoring itself is a social pain in the rear. However, if he's not well rested because of it, there may be some underlying health concerns you should look into. There is a simple survey called Epworth Sleepiness Scale that he can take. You can google and find it online. He may just be a snorer and you can have a dentist make him an oral appliance that moves his jaw forward and opens up is airway so the sound goes away. I would have that done ASAP for both yours and his sake. Lack of sleep can lead to many other health issues.

Thank you. We do end up sleeping in separate rooms a couple times a week but I don't like the idea of doing this every night. It does seem that I have more options than I thought I did based on everyone's replies. Thanks again.

You need to consult to a medical professional about what
actually makes your husband snore.

Mistakenly recognizing the snoring trigger can't make you
solve the problem.

If your husband smokes, then he should stop smoking
because it can affect the throat muscles.

Mouth structure may also be the problem, such as
